How to get Miis to fall in love, confess their feelings, date, and marry in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream — including the new same-sex, aromantic, and dating preference systems.
New: Dating Preferences System
This is one of the biggest changes from the 3DS version. Each Mii now has individual "dating preferences" that determine who they can romantically pursue. This is set during Mii creation and can be changed later via Edit Mii.
Any Gender
The Mii can fall in love with any other Mii, regardless of their gender setting. Same-sex couples are fully supported and celebrated in-game.
No Romance (Aromantic)
The Mii will never develop romantic feelings. They can still have close friendships and all other social interactions — just no romance or marriage.
Specific Gender(s)
Set attraction to he/him Miis, she/her Miis, they/them Miis, or any specific combination. Fully customisable per Mii.
The Relationship Progression

Strangers → Acquaintances
Two Miis meet for the first time. Happens automatically when you place them near each other.

Acquaintances → Friends
Spend time near each other repeatedly. Use Hand Cursor to place them together daily. Resolves faster if they have compatible personalities.

Friends → Close Friends
Continue spending time together. Gift each other. Sometimes requires a "problem solved" interaction.

Close Friends → Crush
Happens randomly when conditions are right. You'll see a special thought bubble (heart). Can't be forced directly.

Crush → Confession
The Mii with a crush will eventually ask to confess. You can encourage or discourage. Success rate improves with higher compatibility and happiness.

Confession → Dating
If the confession is accepted, they start dating. They'll have special events and interactions.

Dating → Marriage Proposal
After dating for a sufficient time, one Mii proposes. You can encourage the relationship to speed this up.

Proposal → Marriage
Both Miis agree → wedding ceremony at the Wedding Venue. Choose outfits, guests. They'll share a house with two bedrooms afterward.
How to Speed Up Romance
→Use Hand Cursor daily to place the two Miis near each other — proximity is the #1 driver of relationship progression.
→Keep both Miis at 80%+ happiness — unhappy Miis rarely develop romantic feelings.
→Gift both Miis their favourite food and clothing regularly to boost happiness quickly.
→Compatible personalities (same group or fan-mapped MBTI matches) naturally develop feelings faster.
→Avoid placing a Mii near too many others at once — spread their social attention to focus on your target pairing.
→The Compatibility Tester percentage does NOT significantly affect speed — don't worry about low scores.
The Baby System
Settings toggle: The baby system can be turned on or off at any time in Settings → Island → Baby System. It's off by default.

Baby System On
Enable in Settings. Married couples will eventually get the option to have a baby.

Baby Born
A baby appears in the couple's house. Notably faster growth than the 3DS version.

Baby Grows Up
The baby grows through stages and eventually becomes a teenager/young adult Mii.

Move Out
You can send grown children "off the island" to free up a population slot. No record is kept after departure.
